1st post, some general stuff about Nanaimo

Posted by Ryan Coffey under: Nanaimo Profile and Events; Uncategorized .

Well, this is it. My first time writing for a blog. Who knows, someone might actually read this!

I figure that most of those who will actually read this first entry will either be some of the first visitors (so you probably already know me or know of me) or will be people who actually find it interesting enough to go through the archives. If you’re one of the latter, I’m glad you like it, please feel free to let me know why so that I can continue doing whatever it is that caught your attention.

Now, I’m not going to bother with introducing myself. If you care about that, go to my website. www.ryan-coffey.com
Much of what I write here will be about homes and real estate in the area, as I am after all a Realtor, and much of it will have to do with living in Nanaimo in general. And no, I’m not worried about running out of material. It’s amazing how much stuff there is to talk about even in a relatively small town.

I’m going to start by writing something quick about Nanaimo that will introduce it to people who’ve never been here or hardly know it.

“Hmm…. now if I only knew a little bit about Nanaimo…” says the out of town reader who hasn’t bothered to research the subject yet.

Well, let’s start with the dead basics.

We’re a town of about 80,000 people on the east coast of Vancouver Island. We’re just about 2 hours drive North of Victoria, and a slightly longer travel time from Vancouver via ferry. But only 20 minutes form there by seaplane.

The climate is that of a temperate rainforest. Basically, your choices for Canadian winters are between frigid cold… and rain. At least with rain, it doesn’t happen every single day and going outside for long periods in the winter risks discomfort rather than freezing to death. (Yes, I’m biased, but after three years out east… I revel in it.) The west cost is where the milder winters are and Nanaimo boasts a lower rainfall average than neighbouring towns in the area.

Here are some weather stats that may interest you: Weather Network Stats on Nanaimo

If you want to lose yourself in stats, tables and figures, be my guest: More info on Nanaimo than you probably need.
I however, generally see tables and figures as tools, and not absolutes. Real life for me has always been less cut and dried that measurements make it seem, although like any tool they have their place and are needed for certain applications.

And as I’m a Realtor, I should definitely put up the latest market stats. You can view them here:

Well, let’s leave it at that for today. Not real exciting for those of you who live here but it’s a start for those of you who don’t. From here on in, things will become much more varied in topic and format.

Ryan
