As a Gabriolan (ite?), I would say that the bridge to Gabe idea is now and will continue to be "dead in the water" unless BC Ferries succeeds in their apparent quest to make it COMPLETELY impractical economically to live here. It has less support here than the "bridge to Vancouver" idea has on Vancouver Island. Ryan, you know that life is not all about real estate values (and BTW when we moved here (about 13 yrs ago average real estate was generally less expensive than Nanaimo-now I would say its pretty much the same or possibly somewhat higher with several multi million dollar properties). A bedroom community for Nanaimo is NOT what the vast majority of islanders envisage for Gabriola--also remember that this is also very much a resort and artisan community- which doesnt mean that being able to drive up to walmart in 10 minutes is high on the priority list. Buy real estate here as an investment-sure - probably better than most in the current slowing market- but putting a bridge across is not going to create instant capital appreciation-in fact initially, I think you would find a pretty steady stream of willing sellers.
